What Is Your Gratuity Really Worth? A Long-Term Example
Gratuity is easy to ignore — it never shows up in your bank account month to month, so it's the part of your CTC that feels the most theoretical. It isn't. Here's what it actually adds up to over a real career.
The formula, quickly
Gratuity is (Basic ÷ 26) × 15 × years of service. The ÷26 and ×15 come from the Payment of Gratuity Act — it's treating each year of service as worth 15 days of Basic pay, calculated against a 26-day working month. For a Basic of ₹50,000/month, that works out to roughly ₹28,846 for every year you stay.
What it adds up to
Because the formula multiplies by years of service directly, the lump sum grows in a straight line, not a curve — every additional year is worth the same amount as the last. Someone who stays 20 years at this Basic salary walks away with ₹5.77L they'd never see reflected in any single payslip along the way.
Two things worth knowing
You need at least 5 years of continuous service to receive it at all — leaving before that forfeits the entire accrued amount, which is worth factoring in if you're considering leaving a role right before a 5-year mark. And it's tax-free up to ₹20 lakh for private sector employees, so for most people the full lump sum arrives with no tax deducted.
